In October 2019, I took to Chicago's Millennium Park to complete a series for my photojournalism course. My goal was to capture humanizing portraits of Chicago residents and tourists alike — many in front of The Bean, an iconic Chicago landmark — in one location over a short period of time. Through conducting brief interviews with parkgoers and taking their photos, I learned how reporting and photography can work hand in hand to create compelling journalism.

While taking a walk, I found a group of musicians performing outside of the Art Institute in Chicago. I spent the morning photographing them while learning that compelling and deeply fun stories can find you when you least expect them to.

In the winter and spring of 2019, I produced and edited the first episode of a documentary video series about gun violence in the city of Evanston. Not long after the video was released, Evanston Township High School went on a soft lockdown due to a nearby shots fired incident. In response, student activists I interviewed organized a demonstration to draw attention to Evanston gun violence and invited me to cover the event. The experience showed me how rewarding it is to develop relationships within a community I am reporting on and how different media can shed fresh light on similar stories.
